Hooked on Fado

I'm currently hooked on Fado music which I discovered by accident on Youtube. Mariza is arguably the most popular Fado singer in Portugal today. Amazing pipes. She sings in the tradition of the late Amália Rodrigues, still considered the undisputed queen of Fado music.

Soulful and melancholy, Wikipedia says Fado is strongly related to the word saudade. It roughly means homesickness, "a kind of longing, and conveys a complex mixture of mainly nostalgia, but also sadness, pain, happiness and love".

I kind of get that, as Fado is very much like my native Philippines' kundiman. Here's a Youtube link to the instrumental version of "Ang Tangi Kong Pag-Ibig" ("My Only Love") by Constancio de Guzman, which happens to be my father's favorite kundiman. Enjoy!
