Luciano Pavarotti, 1935-2007

The world has lost a titan of the arts today:

ROME (AFP) - Operatic legend Luciano Pavarotti, whose showmanship and crossover celebrity turned him into a global superstar, died Thursday at his home in northern Italy at the age of 71.

Hailed by many as the greatest tenor of his generation, Pavarotti passed away during the night at his villa near the city of Modena after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Above is an excellent quality video clip of Pavarotti singing the aria Nessun Dorma, from Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot. The performance was from the 1994 Three Tenors concert with his good friends, tenors Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras and conductor Zubin Mehta.

Addio, Maestro. Riposi in pace. For your gift of music to us all, grazie mille.
